A travel document number can be found on your passport, visa, green card, or any other identification you carry when traveling outside of your country. The travel document number is a unique identifier assigned to your travel document. The number helps identify you as the rightful holder of that document and determines your eligibility for travel.
When traveling to another country, it’s necessary to have all the required and valid documents with you. You will have to present them at the check-in or at the boarding gate.
This article will explain what travel documents might be required for your trip and where to find each travel document number.
What is a travel document number
A travel document number is a series of letters and digits that match the individual's passport, visa, flight booking, or other type of documentation for traveling abroad. Every country has its own rules for visitors of various nationalities. Usually, a passport number will be your travel document number. But in some cases, a passport isn’t enough to visit every country, and for this reason you may need a valid visa or green card. Citizens of the European Union may travel within Europe using an identity card.
For the most accurate information about specific document requirements, you should visit the sites of the foreign offices, embassies or consulates of the countries you would like to travel to. You can also check the IATA Travel Centre for more information about travel documents required for your travel.
Types of travel document numbers:
The passport number is the most common travel document. The number appears on the front cover of your passport (on the page with your photograph). Usually, it’s a 9-digit code.
You can apply for a passport from your birth country or abroad at your country’s consular office. You will need to provide your full name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, current occupation, citizenship, and two recent passport-style photos.
Once you have applied for your passport and it has been processed, you will receive your passport with your passport number. The passport number is also issued to you when your original passport is renewed or replaced.
ID Card Number:
If you are an EU national traveling within the European Union, your identity card may be sufficient. However, this depends on the rules of the EU country you are traveling to. Sometimes the ID card won’t be sufficient and you’ll be required to show a valid passport.
Since a passport isn’t enough to visit every country, you may need a valid visa. A visa is an endorsement on a travel document that authorizes the bearer to seek entry into a foreign country for a specific purpose.
The visa number is the number assigned to your visa. Look for the visa number in the lower right-hand corner of your visa.
The visa helps determine the reason for your visit to a country and prescribes the conditions of your visit. A visa number is assigned by the consulate or embassy of another country. This allows you to enter and exit foreign countries, as well as determines how long you can be in that territory for traveling purposes.
There are a few different ways that you can get a visa. You can apply for a visa at the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting. Another way to get a visa is through a travel agent. They may be able to help you obtain visas for certain countries. Finally, some visas can also be obtained online.
Green Card number:
Permanent residents of the United States are issued a green card, which is also their travel document number. The card is valid for ten years and must be renewed during that time.
If you have a permanent resident card (green card), you can find a green card number on the front side. The number is also embedded within the characters on the backside as well.
There are a few different ways that you can get a green card. You can apply for a green card at the embassy or consulate of the United States in your home country. If you are already in the United States, you may be able to apply through USCIS. If you lose your green card, or it is stolen, you can contact the USCIS for a new one.
Booking reference number:
A booking reference (also called PNR number) is a unique code specific to an individual flight reservation. The Passenger Name Record (PNR) is an identifier for travel documents used in airline reservations.
The PNR appears on the upper left corner of your ticket or itinerary.
You will need the booking or ticket reference number to check in online. Once you check in, your mobile boarding pass will also include your booking reference, together with your surname, flight information (flight number/date/time), seat number and boarding zone.
If you want to have your boarding pass stored in your Apple Wallet or GPay, download GetPassbook. It scans your boarding pass and creates a digital mobile pass, which you can add to the wallet of your choice.
The booking reference number, confirmation code and ticket numbers will be included in the email you received when your reservation was made. If you do not have this information on hand, contact customer service for assistance.
Other travel document numbers:
In special cases, a country you’re flying to may require a health declaration. These documents vary from country to country. For example, Greece requires the Passenger Locator Form (PLF) and Mexico requires a Health Questionnaire, together with the Multiple Migratory Form (FMM). Remember to always check what mandatory travel documents you will have to present at check-in, security and immigration.
